THE LIFESTYLE CHRONICLE: THIS WEEKEND IN LONDON

 This Weekend...

This weekend my boyfriend and I decided to put ourselves in a pre holiday mood by lapping
up some Turkish food.

Aziz Mangal is a little Turkish place on Shaftesbury Avenue.
It is nothing swanky aesthetically, somewhat side street take away-esc but the food is sure to please.

The meat is cooked on a charcoal grill which smells amazing.
Personally, I was all set to pop on my maxi dress, embellished sandals and pretend I was sat by the ocean.

Upon arrival you are greeted with this delight, complentary of course.

After a long day walking from one end of London to the other, scouring Westfields and becoming emotionally engrossed in Le Mis, my food was devoured in a matter of seconds.
We then opted for a main of Yogurtlu Chicken Beyti
which is spicy minced chicken with garlic, yogurt, flatbread, a tomato sauce and rice.
It was scrumptious to say the least..
A mixture of traditonal turkish flavours, chargrilled chicken and some spice.
It all felt very rustic.

And ofcourse, after something savoury you simply have to devour something sweet...
It is the law.
Turkish BAKLAVA

My weekend was also spent on Portobello Road..scouring the market on a chinaware
hunt.

The sun was shining, the sky was blue and there was something exciting about following the crowds in the weekend haze.
I came away with three 1910 blue and white saucers.

The perfect additions to my shelf of antiques something I cannot wait to see when I visit home next week.

THE MAKEUP CHRONICLE: EYES, EYES, EYES

The Bodyshop

Smokey Moonstone

 Palette

- Eyeshadow was the first makeup purchase that I ever made, I believe that it was sometime back when I was around 12 years old and makeup was shiny and new to me.
My first eyeshadow palette consisted of three super bright turquoise shades and a dark, shimmery green.
I suppose the 'Dangerous Mermaid' look was all the rage back in year 7?

Okay…
Maybe not.

Having greyish greenish blueish (some colour I can't quite pin point) eyes, the green family of shades suit me best if I am looking for that dare I say it 'eye popping' colour however, these days I much prefer to wear espresso browns and golds on my peepers.

If you read THIS POST from last month which saw me head over to 'The Bodyshop' for a make over as part of their 'Give Joy' Christmas experience, you will have already been introduced to
the Smokey Moonstone Palette
£14.00 for 7.2g

I have been using these shades on my eyelids everyday for a good month now.
I love that the colours are so versatile and can be used to create both day looks and night looks.
Having cool toned eyes, I love the cool undertones of these earthy shades.

The perfect balance

This palette was one of 2012's best sellers and the four shadows are housed in a very tactile and durable glossy, black caseing.

As I am such a fan of The Smokey Moonstone Palette I am going to share with you today
my 'everyday eye' using these beautiful colours.
As the shades do not have specific names I am just going to refer to them in a clockwise order as shades 1,2,3 and 4 for ease.

The Look.

I start by priming my eye lids with the Urban Decay 'Primer Potion' to stop these particularly powdery shadows from slipping and creasing.
I then sweep shade number 2 over my entire lid.

This is followed by shade number three swept under my lower lash line and on the outer corner of my eye blended up towards my socketbone.

I then take shade 4 through my socketbone and along my upper lash line to create the smokey look.
I find that this look works best with plenty of drama from eyeliner and mascara.

Finally I use shade one in the inner corner of my eye to lighten up this ares, as I have fairly small eyes this brings my eye shape out a little bit…if I am feeling in the mood for a brow highlight I will also take this shade below my brows.

And that is my final Smokey Moonstone look!
What do you think?
I am praying that I am on my way down to London again this evening for some more capital madness but I shall be uploading my weekly video as usual on Sunday, so watch out for that!
Love, Holl

THE HAIR CHRONICLE:CONDITIONING WHIPPED CREAM?

      MilkShake

- I want to start by sayig that…
I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this product

and here is what it is and why I love it…

Milk_Shake Conditioning Whipped Cream
With Integrity 41
No rinse conditioning and protective creamy foam for all hair types
- "Formulated to condition the hair keeping moisture balance and preserving the hair colour
integrity. It leaves hair soft, shiny and healthy. The milk proteins improve the hair structure and conditioning special emollients gives long lasting hydration.
The Integrity 41 guarentees great colour setting.

- I discovered this bottle of fun in a monthly subscription box not so long ago
and since the very first day I used this, I added it to my list of 'must re purchase.'

My hair has been abused over the years, from harsh dyes to extreme straightening…it is no wonder that the top of my hair is in fantastic condition but the bottom, a bit of a disaster.
I first tried this conditioner to try and salvage the ends of my hair a little, this is because they are super, super dry.

The mousse which smells EXACTLY like cream soda…
(has anybody ever tried that
my dad used to buy in the supermarket when I was younger) is applied to damp hair.
I tend to concentrate the mousse on the ends alone and leave my hair to dry naturally.
Once dry, my hair is super, super soft and the ends far less coarse and nasty.
Ofcourse, it smells divine also!

It is also non greasy so if you were to apply it to your roots you would have no problems.
I am very interested to try out other products from the Milkshake range..
And they are a Liverpool based company!
Have you tried it?
What did you think?

THE LIFESTYLE CHRONICLE: 3 WAYS I MADE MY UNI ROOM HOMELY

Home Sweet HOME

- The most popular questions that I have been asked recently are..
"How did you make your room at university feel more like yours?"
and
How did you get over your homesickness?"

With these questions in mind I thought that I would write about the three ways that I
concquered homesickness by making my university bedroom feel more homey!

I have had many requests on my Youtube channel to film a room tour
video and I am hoping to get that filmed within the next couple of weeks so you can see
goodgollymisshollie HQ for yourselves. :)

In the mean time...
I am a lover of home decoration and interiors, I really like to make things feel my own
therefore moving to a new room
with four white walls, a horrible, rough, scraggy carpet and a prison like feel was a decoration challenge for me.

Five months on...
I look around my new little space now and I love it.

And here is what I did...
1.
- I set a little theme.

- I pick up inspiration from absolutley everywhere, but I wanted to make my room feel like somewhere I would like to be.
I think we all know where that place is…so I brought little pieces of London to my room.
I wanted to be reminded of my favourite place Camden Town so I made my room feel
a little bit vintage-esc, a little bit ecclectic so to speak with my embellished kimono hung from my wardrobe, collected teacups dotted around and pictures of Camden Town.

I wanted to be reminded also why I am here at university so I decorated my pin board
with inspirative pieces themed around London, fashion and beauty, publishing and journalism.
My pin board became my 'dream board'.
Something to aim for, and a reminder as to why I am here in Liverpool.

2.
- I filled my room with things that make me happy.

- These include my favourite photographs in cute frames, my entire perfume collection, my favourite books, my favourite colours purple and red, my leopard print accessories and my Jewellery

I brought my favourite films my Sex and the City box set and my makeup.
I also collected things that were new to the new me, this remind me of the old me and the new me.

3.
- Have your friends hanging out in your room, make them all a brew or a cocktail if it is past 6 ;)
-I found that inviting my friends into my room made it feel like a happy place
for people to come and hangout, a social place for gossip and good old moaning about everything.

I like to have people in as I have a little TV so we can watch Sex and the City to our hearts content!
One thing is for sure, you can crank your heating up all day and all night without worrying about the bill! My room is constantly a little sauna and you can usually tell I am home if the Spice Girls are
blasting out and there's a furious clatter of fingers on a keyboard.

How did you make your room feel more homely?

THE LIFESTYLE CHRONICLE: A BIG BLACK BOX ARRIVED..

 Someone has good Taste

- Wednesday morning saw the postal lady where I live had to walk out of her little booth and hand me a rather large box.

As I am going through a bit of a sorry patch with my degree, this box was like
chin up Holl, smile

So, what was in this box you speak of?

Grazia 'Magazine Subscription'

- Now, firstly…really? 20 issues of my favourite -must-work-for-them-one-day-please magazine all for me?

This beautiful scarf was also included which is super soft and has a neon bird print on the material.
It is large too which means it can be worn any which way.
I really am a scarf fan!

The Goddess Guide by Gisele Scandlon
- I first discovered this book a few years ago and always wanted to add it to my
'coffee table collection'

(I don't actually own a coffee table, but if I did this book would be on it along with Camilla Morton's 'Sleeping Beauty'
Just beautiful books to pick up and have a flick through whilst sipping a brew.
It is a beautiful book for the seeker of things stylish and eclectic.

and finally…

this gorgeous rose gold bracelet with triangle links..

This box was given to me very kindly courtesy of Ladbroke's
who are celebrating the new year and wanted to give something back to beauty and fashion bloggers.
How very, very kind of them!
It's nice to have a little pick me up every now and again
Love, Holl

THE BEAUTY CHRONICLE: MAYBELLINE 'FIT ME' FOUNDATION

Makeup that fits you

- Around two years ago on this very blog, I babbled on about a foundation that my aunt
(who lives in America I might add) kindly gave me.
That very foundation was
Maybelline's 'Fit Me'
I can remember including it in a monthly favourites video and stating that I couldn't find it in
the UK anywhere.
Well, now I know why!

Since then more of us UK girlies have been wearing the Fit Me foundation as it is now
available in the UK.
*Hooray*

One thing that struck me about this foundation the first time around was the lightness of the product on my face, prior to trying it I had been wearing Bourjois' 'Healthy Mix' - which is also a light wearing foundation.
Fit Me felt even lighter.

My reason for picking up this new(old) foundation was simple.
I was getting a little tiresome of my current Collection 'Lasting Perfection'foundation as it is very thick and although it doesn't apply cakey, it is a very creamy and a very thick foundation to work with.
My poor MAC 130 was always clogged up to the nines with product.
I simply fancied a change and not only this but non of my foundations actually matched my skin tone anymore!
Since shunning the tan I needed something much paler in tone.

So why Maybelline's 'Fit Me'?
They say:

  • No oils, no waxes, no nonsense
  • Natural coverage that leaves skin the way it was meant to be…fresh, breathing, natural
  • Exclusive translucent base and lightweight pigments allow skin's natural highs and lows to show through
  • Non-comedogenic, dermatologist-tested

I picked the foundation up for a reasonable £7.99 in Superdrug.
In light of my natural skintone I chose the shade '120 Classic Ivory' which is a part of the 'fair' tones.
It is a very smooth liquid foundation and applies lightly.
I found that it is a medium buildable coverage, I usually dispense a thumbnail amount of the product onto the back of my hand and apply generously.

I love the fact that our verison of this foundation includes a pump applicator as the US version does not.
The bottle feels quite luxurious as it a glass bottle with a glossy black lid.

You couldn't get away with just wearing this foundation alone (something I do love about the  Collection 'Lasting Perfection' foundation - you certianly need a concealer to blur out any sparse areas, dark circles or redness.

I love this foundation to wear everyday it feels very effortless and has caused my (usually) problematic skin no hiccups.

Have you ever tried this foundation?
What did you think?
Love, Holl

THE FASHION POST: MY EVERYDAY JEWELLERY

Bring on the Bling

- It would be no lie to say that I have a penchanct for costume jewellery.
This is something that I indefinately inherited from my Nana, an avid jewellery lover.

Day to day
I like to wear the same pieces over and over again, collecting and adding as a go along.

I store my everyday mix and match pieces in this gorgeous, kooky pot that I purchased from
TK Maxx.

I like to wear too much jewellery because to me, there are no set rules,
The more the better in my opinion!
Who doesn't love a jangly arm full of stacked bracelets and finger full of stacked rings?
Here are my signature pieces so to speak...

The Wrist Candy

I love my wrists full of bracelets, my favourite being the blue and white, 'china plate' inspired piece that my Grandparents brought me back as a gift from Amsterdam.
My watch is the rose gold, Michael Korrs dupe from Aldo.

The Finger Candy - Store in a teacup!

- I love to wear cocktail rings, I wear around four at a time aside a one dainty and elegant ring to break up the chaos.

The Neck Candy

- My Tiffany necklace was on of my Christmas present from my Boyfriend, It is a firm favourite of mine, very elegant and beautiful.
I like to wear a collar/ cuff statement necklace if I am wearing a blouse buttoned to the neck to add some depth to my neckline.

Are you a fan of masses of jewellery or prefer the more subtle touches?
Love, Holl

THE FASHION POST: THE 'CHINAWARE' DRESS

Tea Anyone?

- In recent months I have become a little obsessed with teacups, tea pots and blue and white china

(Spode and Wedgewood if you like)

I have become quite interested in the whole 'blue and white' thing in general.
My beady eyes darting around and fixating on some azure blue and linen white pattern.

It is all really quite crazy.

- Yesterday saw me head into HandM for a scour around the last dregs of the sale, this follows a visit to their Oxford Street store last week whereby I was suitably impressed by their garments.
HandM are usually a store that I never take much interest in for one reason or another.
My boyfriend had very kindly also handed me a £5 discount voucher for the store.

I spotted some blue and white and headed straight for it…
On the rail, I found this dress…

It was £7… £2 with the voucher
Reeeeesult

Although it is a summery number I love pairing it with wooly tights and my biker jacket!
What do you thinkk?
Love, Holl

THE LIFESTYLE CHRONICLE: MY WEEKLY PLANNER

Dear Diary..

- I don't know about you, but I have become a little obsessed with the new ITV
drama Mr Selfridge. which aires on Sunday nights at 9pm.
- It is well worth a watch.

This trip to the smoke  saw me visit good old Selfridges for the first time ever.
I have ofcourse popped into the Trafford centre store, but never have I stepped foot within the
original department store.
At the time I payed a visit, Selfridges was decked to the brim in Christmas clad, and I must admit
it was something magical.

Whilst exploring the store in its entirity I stumbled across the vast book department and I found a diary.
For years I have used a Filofax to organise my day to day doings, but there was something about the charm of one diary that I came across in particular that sold me…

I must admit, I fell in love with the diary but I was very adamant to be leaving the store with a canary yellow bag hanging from the crook of my arm.

£12 later I was the proud owner of my shiny, new 2013 weekly planner.

Parisian Chic, Weekly Planner

Resembling a moleskin note book this cute diary contains a beautiful satin ribbon to mark your page, a leather effect cover and stunningly quaint page interior.

Each week contains an idea that the author states will allow you to be
"Your most beautiful and stylish in every situation."

The diary is written by the celebrity model Innes De La Fressange and Elle fashion journalist Sophie Gachet - authors of The Times bestseller Parisian Chic.

I love the spacious pages, and 'scrapbook' feel.
It is perfect for jotting down my plans, blog post ideas and university work.
I write down everything using my cute lipstick pen that I bought at the
VandA museam in London.

I love being super organised and counting down the weeks till exciting plans!
How do you organise yourself?
Love, Holl

THE FASHION CHRONICLE: THE VINTAGE BAROQUE BLOUSE

VintageLoving

Blouse: vintage
Leggings: Topshop
Nails: Nails Inc 'Baker Street'
Waistcoat: Zara
Necklace: Morrocan market
Lipstick: MAC 'Girl About Town'

If you read this post on my trip to Camden Town you will have seen a picture of a vintage store that I stumbled across in the stables market.
'Retro World' housed so many beautiful, vintage finds, the blouse section a real gem  if you are looking for something a little bit different.

There were rows and rows of high collared, tunic blouses with elasticated waists
-all for a very reasonable price.

I picked up the yellow and black, embellished blouse after umming and arring for
ages over which to buy.
It has a very intricate beading and sits at a flattering level, not too long, not too short.

The key to vintage shopping is to definately try before you buy as most garments no longer have sizing labels in them.
Retro World had changing rooms so I was able to make sure that I picked a blouse that fitted nicely.
I could have spent all day in the store…
Are you a vintage shopper?

Today I am headed back to the north west to start semester two!
I am returning to Liverpool with a
"Glass half full" mindset which will hopefully set me back up with a positive frame of mind.
Bring it on!

Love, Holl

THE LIFESTYLE CHRONICLE: CAMDEN TOWN.

CamdenTown

- There are a few places that I like to visit to really put a beaming smile on my face.
London is ofcourse one of them.
and
Camden Town is my favourite of the bunch.
There is something about the eccelectic, vibrant and buzzing town that gets me everytime.
If you have visited this little magical place yourself, you will know what I mean.

I thought it would be nice to take you all on a little photo-trip so to speak around my favourite place.

If you like bustling, intertwining street, market bazaars, street food and vintage fashion
then Camden is the place for you.

I have just returned from a week in the big smoke, having spent new years eve on Waterloo Bridge with my boyfriend, the fireworks were spectacular and it really was the most wonderful way to bring in the new year, 2013.

I hope you all had a wonderful new years celebration.
Have you ever visited Camden?
