THE HAIRCARE CHRONICLE: ERADICATING BRASSY TONES

Bristows 'Silver'

Shampoo and Conditioner

- Around 2 weeks ago, I started the very long process of lightening my hair up in a
bid to eradicate the artificial red and gain some tonal warmth to my hair

I have begun by applying warm toned highlights throughout my hair.
**You can find my first post about this here**
to really lift the colour up from the seriously dark shade that it had become.

Ofcourse, I could have gone about this by paying a visit to a salon,
have the colour lifted and paid mega bucks for the privilege, but as
a student, that really was not an option, so I kind have had to muddle along as I go.

With no definate end goal in site I am going about this one step at a time.

As expected after my first lot of 'blonde' highlights were applied, they
took very sporadically and mis match in colour.
My roots were platinum blonde, with my hair getting gradually more coppery towards the ends.

I love the coppery tone but I feel a little more lightening would suffice.
I applied an all over tint colour to make my highlights all one colour.
I used
Schwarzkopf 'Poly Colour' Tint
in 38 Warm Brown

Once my highlights were all the same shade, I begun the toning process.
For this, I have been using two products that retail at £1 each from Home Bargains and Bodycare.

Bristows
Silver shampoo and conditioner

The lilac toned products are very mild which means they can be used with every hair wash, without
causing any dodgey purple highlights.
Toning products are used to lift the brassy tones out of blonde treated hair.
They are intended for people with blonde, grey and white hair but for me, I use them to
lighten up certain parts.

I have been using these products for 2 weeks now and my hair has never felt softer.
Not even my normal colour treated hair shampoo and conditioner can make my hair feel as soft and look as shiny as these two beauties do.
I do believe that it has something to do with the sunflower oil.

So has it worked?
I leave the conditoner on for around an hour and I can say that my highlights are much less orange in tone and are all blended to the same shade!

What do you think of lilac toners?
Love, Holl

THE MAKEUP CHRONICLE: BB+

Dr.Jart+ BB Beauty balm

- Before starting uni I vowed to myself that I would not become one of those girls who never made the effort for any public occasion.

I am not fussed about wearing makeup when there is no need, but I always told myself
that it was important to look my best whenever possible.

Throughout sixth form I always made the effort, perhaps I over did it sometimes.
Since starting uni last year, all of that went out of the window.
I rock up to lectures looking a wee bit bedraggled as I sit amongst people preened to perfection.

The truth is, that I just don't care enough to wake up super early to
get my gladrags on and do my makeup to night out perfection.

These days, I do things simply…If at all.

Let me introduce you all to my morning saviour.

Dr. Jart+
- Water Fuse BB Beauty Balm with SPF 25

What this product says on the tin.

- Oil Free Hydrating Moisturiser
Perfect for people with naturally oily skin like myself

- Water Holding System
Perfect for people with naturally very dry skin

-Sunscreen and Aloe
Fights skin damage and signs of aging.

-Hides Uneven Skintone and Blemishes
PERFECT for mornings when my skin tends to look a little sallow or red.
In the pot it seems a little orange but once blended the dark tone is soon eradicated..
I am currently the palest of the pale and it doesn't make me look overly orange.

Puffy eyes and extreme redness around my nose, eradicated in one thin layer of BB

I have deposited a fair bit of this product into an old MAC tester pot so that I have it on the go as it is just so lovely.
On early lecture starts I apply a little bit of the balm on a MAC 130 stippling brush, cover my entire face, shade in my eyebrows and put a lashing of mascara on.

Simple everyday makeup essentials

Simple and effective.
I love that there is no need for a heavy masking foundation.
I love you Dr.Jart ;)
Have you tried a BB cream?
What did you think?
Love, Holl

THE SKINCARE CHRONICLE: SOOTHES, CALMS, CLEARS

SkinEtica

- I have come to a rather strange little conclusion about water.
Yes, you read that right - water.
I recently visited home for reading week and there certainly is something in the Yorkshire water.

A strange phenomena has occured since I moved to the North West.
Everytime I visit home in good old Yorkshire my skin breaks out rather badly, particually on my forehead.
I use the exact same cleansers and skincare products as I do in Liverpool, but it happens every time.
As soon as I cleanse my skin when I am back at university, my skin clears up immediately.

I truly believe that it is something to do with the water.
Hard and soft water and all of that.

Liverpool has medium hardness of water, whilst Leeds has hard water.
I am left wondering if this has something to do with my forehead explosions?

- Strange water analogies aside I have been testing a new skincare product recently to try
and clean up my post Leeds skin.

"Fast acting skin clearing, kind to skin, no side affects, non greasy, no harsh chemicals and non staining."

You may have recieved one of these little green topped gems in your October 2012 Glossybox,
if you have it lying around give it a go on your stubborn break outs.
Here is what I thought of it….

Skinetica previously known as Acnigon aims to battle unsightly breakouts in 2-3 days.
You apply the product onto clean, makeup free skin every 12 hours.

Since visiting home for 10 days, my forehead looked like this:

I have been trialling Skinetica for a week now, dabbing a small amount of the product onto my messy forehead.
This product is also good for tackling both whiteheads and blackheads, I like to dab
a little around my poreous nose before applying my makeup.

After a weeks use, my forehead is much clearer

and those nasties are certainly on their way out!
I suspect with another weeks use the blemishes will be eradicated completely.

Have you ever tried Skinetica?
It can be used on acne and is proven to give lasting results.
What did you think?
Do you notice your skin changes depending where you are?
Love, Holl

THE LIFESTYLE CHRONICLE: 25 RANDOM FACTS ABOUT ME

The 25 Facts about me TAG

- I have seen the '50 random facts about me' TAG floating around on various blogs and Youtube channels for a few weeks now.
I love reading other people's random facts posts as I am a total nosey parker.

I asked my lovely Twittery followers if they would like to read my random facts TAG.
and I had an overwhelming number of yes answers.

I have decided to take part in the 25 random facts about me TAG
as I thought 50 would be sooo long to read and your cup of tea would be cold by the time you finished reading it.

I do put a lot of what is going on in my life here on my little plot of the interweb, but I figuired this TAG is a nice way to find out a little bit more about me and learn something you may not have known.

THE SKINCARE CHRONICLE: FACE WIPES?!?!

Johnson's Face Care

Dreamy skin

Facial Wipes

- FACIAL WIPE?!
I know, I can hear you shrieking in despair.

I think it is about time facial wipes gained their credability back.
Afterall, we did love them for years!

Admitedly during my everyday facial cleansing routine I don't rely on face wipes
to get the job done properly, but I do use them religiously to take off the first layer of my makeup before going on to cleansing, toning and moisturising etc.

I have been using various brands of face wipe for years but I have discovered some recently that have become my firm favourites and a brand that I am sure to repurchase.

Johnson Face Care
Dreamy Skin
- Night facial cleansing wipes - enriched with relaxing moonflower aroma known to calm your senses - suitable for all skin type.

I recommend these cleansing wipes as they are just so useful and effective in removing stubborn makeup.
They are textured, a quality that I like as I can really scrub at stubborn eyeliner and they are also very wet so you actually feel like your face is being cleansed thoroughly.
And the scent of them is just gorgeous!

You must give these wipes a whirl if you can be seen using a facial wipe. ;)
(*Don't forget to store your cleansing wipes with the opening face down so that your first cloth
is never dry!*)
Do you still use facial wipes?
Love, Holl

THE FASHION CHRONICLE: INTRODUCING AN ETHICAL FASHION LABEL

Umoja Fashion

- I have been so excited to finally publish this post for some time now as it regards
something that I absolutely love.

You may remember THIS POST from a few weeks ago.
I attended the Liverpool Style Night in aid of the 'Make a wish foundation'.
Whilst covering the event, I came across some fresh new fashion brands and designers.
As a long term fashion apreciater and writer of a blog that is 1/3 fashion I had my
eyes open for something that made me say something I rarely say about high fashion.
"That is my style down to a T and I would wear that tomorrow"

Out of the designers that showcased their work, there was one that made me say that.
And for me, this particually designer is one to watch.

Introducing…Umoja.
by Victoria Helen Hughes.

- 'Umoja' which means 'unity' in Swahili is the brand name of Victoria's fashion label with
a conscience.

Mixing Victoria's evalasting love for fashion and new found love for the beautiful country of Tanzania and it's people, Umoja believes that ethical fashion should look like fashion, therefore creates fabulous clothing for the fashion focused world.

Victoria's label produces limited pieces that are carefully created using as many labels and components sourced in Africa as possible.
Her oversized trousers are made from  Kanga
Umoja products are beautifully hand crafted by SOKO-Kenya
who also work with ASOS on their ASOS Africa Collection.

Umoja helps a little towards breaking the cycle of poverty while feeling passionate about creating prosperity for all people involved in the label along the way.

Victoria from Leeds (small cheer for West Yorkshire!) studied fashion at UCLAN and was inspired by women of all ages from the African village of Moshi sewing on machine's whilst trying to make a living.
The idea of creating employment for some of these skilled workers linked quickly with her dream of creating a new, fashion label with a conscience.

As I mentioned previously, I absolutely love the Umoja Collections
My personal favourites being the blue box pleat dress, the oversized trousers and the pink, loose fit jumper.
Prices range from £35 to £55
TOPSHOP PRICES for much better quality and for a better cause.

All imagery courtesy of Marie Williams - visit her photography Tumblr HERE

I strongly recommend that you keep your eye on Victoria and Umoja and
pop over and say hello to her, tell her I sent you!

THE MAKEUP CHRONICLE: HOW TO CLEAN YOUR MAKE-UP BRUSHES

Cleaning My

Makeup Brushes..

- Now, this may seem a little strange but I absolutely love cleaning my makeup brushes!
I find it super theraputic and oddly, rather satisfying when my brushes are all clean sitting pretty
in their I love London mug holder.

I have a professional brush roll with a large number of industry brushes but I tend to have around 10
of my everyday favourites that I like to clean every fortnight.
If I have a lot of time throughout the week, I will spot clean after every use, but realistically
every fortnight they have a little scrub.
I like to clean my brushes often as the foundation I use is quite a thick consistency and the bristles in my MAC 130 Stippling brush get matted together and messy.
It also good to clean them if you have been having a bought of facial breakouts,
dirty brushes could well be the cause!

Recently I have been using
Dr. Bronner's Magic Soaps
18-in-1 Hemp Almond Pure Castile Soap

to give my brushes a clean as it as gentle formula, another option would be to use baby shampoo.
You don't want to use anything to chemically harsh, espcially if you are using professional, real hair brushes.

Firstly I lay out a towel to pop my brushes on to dry and run the tap until it is at a tepid temperature.

I then dispense a thumbnail of the Magic Soap into the palm of my hand that I have run underneath the water.

I take my dirty brush and swirl them into the soap before adding more water to rinse the brush clean.
You will be amazed at the odd colours that come out of your brush bristles!

Be careful to not immerse your brush underneath the water as this could cause the glue holding the brush together to become lose, you may end up with a broken brush handle or lots of bristles falling out when you use your brush.

Rinse your brush bristles clear and lay it flat on the towel, it is advised to have the end of the brush hanging over a surface to stop any water getting caught in the barrell for the same reasons as above.

Allow them to air dry for a good few hours and hey presto,
beautiful, clean brushes!
Love, Holl

THE BEAUTY CHRONICLE: LUSH BATH BALLISTIC REVIEW

I'm loving this Twilight

- Lush's Twilight bath ballistic is one of those products that I re purchase time and time again for a number of reasons.
My reasons are:
1) The lingering scent it leaves in my bedroom when I have it on my little cake stand makes me very happy
when I come home for a visit.

2) It produces you with the most relaxing bath you will have.

" Let the sun set around you as you let go of the day and drift off to a world of dreams."
If you are struggling to sleep, this is perfect for using in the evenings.
With lavender oil for when you need a bit of extra help to wind down.
We've added visuals to this bath to help your mind let go and embrace the night time.
Twilight dissolves to a create a growing sunset that gradually gets darker until you are left with the glimmer of stars."

Twilight - £3.20 @ Lush

THE HAIRCARE CHRONICLE: PUTTING BLONDE ONTO RED

Hair Highlights

- Spring/Summer 2013 for me, will be the year of lots of highlights.
I haven't had highlights in my hair since I was around 13/14 years old, but for some reason this year I am looking to add a little more tonal depth to my locks.

My current hair colour sits somewhere in the mahogany brown family.
It has a lot of red in it, but has a lot of dark brown running through also.
Although it was my favourite hair colour ever, I am a little bit done with the cherry red tresses.
I am sure that I will revisit it again but for now, I am looking for chocolate brown hair complemented with honey toned highlights.

There is no time like the present to get on with something.
This will be a long, time consuming progress so I am setting a lot of patience aside.
Also, as a student I can't really afford to have this done professionally at a salon which would probably speed up the process much, much quicker and cause less harm to my hair.

My first time application of highlights has produced some lovely warm tones, coppery tints to my hair which I am super pleased with as a starting point.
Admitedly, some areas close to my roots have taken to the dye much stronger and they could well be described as bombshell blonde…
Luckily for me, highlights are covered by other sections of hair!

Before stage 1 of operation highlights…

I used this Smart Highlights kit in 'Cool Blonde
It was a reasonable £4.99 from Superdrug.

I am really pleased with how my first attempt went I shall be using a toning shampoo to help eradicate some of the dark coppery tones and will be repeating the process shortly, but for an initial lift
I am quite pleased.
Have you ever tried highlights, do you have any tips for me to lighten up the locks?
Love, Holl xo

Whether you are a fan of Valentines day or not, this months Glossybox contains some great products to help you feel gorgeous.

I have to say that, this is my favourite box to date.

Sasoon Salon

What I thought…

- I am a huge fan of shine sprays and they regular feature in my monthly favourites videos and blog posts.

Despite the intoxicating scent it gives off, it is not a bad little shine spray…It can however leave the roots a little bit sticky.

Miners Cosmetics

"Irresistably kissable lips for Valentines day in 12 flattering shades they are perfect for an effortless day look or a more dramatic night time makeover."

What I thought…

- I have heard a fair bit about Miners cosmetics over the past 3 years that I have been reading blogs and watching Youtube video's.
This lipstick is my favourite to date as it is a beautiful pearl, finish, lilac tinted lipstick.
It is smooth and none drying on the lips.
For a low cost lipstick the packaging is durable.
I have the shade 'Dreamer'.

Anatomicals
You need a blooming shower! Your nose smells rose body cleanser.
£5.00

"This vitalising body cleanser makes every shower a flower-power experience.
The natural healing properties of rose and jasmine leave you feeling as fresh and fragrant as a flower ready to hit the town on St Valentine's.

What I thought…

- I have a huge fan of Anatomicals products and I currently have a huge obsession with the rose scent.
This beautiful shower gel is just beautiful in the shower!
It reminds me of a flower garden in the summertime, it is a true summer scent and a beautiful shower gel!

What are your Valentine's day must have products for a night with your loved one or a night with the girls?
